Dear Toastmaster member,

As directed by policy, the Board of Directors periodically reviews membership dues to ensure that the organization can satisfy member needs while continuously enhancing their experience and the services and programs provided. After a review of the organization's five-year financial forecast of activities compared with forecasted revenue, the Board has voted to increase membership dues.

As a result, on October 1, 2011 Toastmasters' annual membership dues will increase from $54 (U.S. dollars) to $72 (U.S. dollars), payable in increments of $36 (U.S. dollars) every six months.

Several factors drive this increase:

1. Member needs are greater than ever.

2. Since 1995, membership has grown nearly 55%, from 169,330 members in 1995 to 262,000 in 2010. In this same period, annual dues increased only once in 2005 from $36 (U.S. dollars) to $54 (U.S. dollars).

3. Toastmasters has passed the economy of scale established a decade ago; its support services must expand in order to better serve its ever-expanding member base.

The increased funding will be used to enhance member support and services, and enable theimplementation of the five-year Strategic Plan that was developed by the Board of Directors in 2010.

Frequently Asked Questions - Dues Increase

On October 1, 2011, Toastmasters International membership dues will be US $72, payable in increments of US $36 every six months. This is equivalent to US $6 per month.

Q: Why are we having a dues increase?

A: In 2007, the membership voted to give authority to the Board of Directors to determine the amount of dues each member is to pay. The Board of Directors reviews the membership dues every two-three years to ensure that the organization can continue to satisfy the needs of the members while continuously enhancing their experience and the services and programs provided.

Q: Is Toastmasters membership a good value?

A: As you consider the dues increase, think for a moment about seminars, conferences, and college or university classes that cost hundreds, even thousands of dollars. Toastmasters, at US $72 per year provides education and invaluable practical experience, support and reinforcement. Toastmasters is the best value for anyone seeking communication and leadership training.

Q: What are the benefits to the member?

A: There is not one specific benefit; the increased funding will be used to enhance member support and services and enable the implementation of the five-year Strategic Plan that was developed by the Board of Directors in 2010. These initiatives include:

· Enhanced customer service and support

· Modernization of the communication program

· Increased focus on leadership development

· Strengthen the district, division and area recognition programs

· Focus on quality clubs as well as organizational growth

· User-friendly website and technological enhancements

Q: Has the organization tried to reduce its costs so a dues increase wouldn't be necessary?

A: Toastmasters is always looking for ways to reduce expenses. For example, in the past three years, the organization has:

· Reduced the weight of the paper that is used in education program manuals and materials and the Toastmaster magazine resulting in significant ongoing savings. However, printing expenses have increased as a result of increased volume as well as the actual cost of the paper and ink.

· Significantly reduced postage rates for New Member Kits and educational materials through vendor negotiation and bidding processes.

· Leveraged a competitive printing environment to reduce overall costs.

· Continually increased the availability of online tools to conduct club and district business, which also reduces labor costs.

· Providing more material digitally via the Toastmasters International website.

Q: Should Toastmasters reduce the products and services provided to members and clubs to save money?

A: Members and prospective members are well educated, discerning and have high expectations. They expect up-to-date, high-quality products and services to help them improve their communication and leadership skills. Offering fewer or outdated products and services will not meet the expectations of our members and clubs, will discourage current members from continuing their membership, and deter others from joining. New and improved products, programs and services will better support each member's experience as well as overall membership growth and retention.

Q: Can the organization obtain the needed funds from other sources?

A: Toastmasters have several sources of revenue in addition to membership dues. The largest is sales of products such as educational materials, recognition items, books, and other club and member supplies. Toastmasters offers these materials to all members and clubs around the world. Revenue from this source helps lengthen the interval between dues increases.

Q: When was the last dues increase and how much was it?

A: The last dues increase was in October 2005, rising from US $36 to US $54 per year. The increase was projected to carry the organization through another three to five years. It has now been six years since the last dues increase.

Q: What will be the financial impact for districts?

A: Districts will receive additional funds, which are used to support the district mission of helping clubs meet their members' needs, training club officers, organizing new clubs and promoting membership growth within the clubs in the district.

Q: Has Toastmasters considered reducing the funds provided to districts?

A: Reducing the funds districts receive would not be beneficial to clubs and to the organization as a whole. Districts provide much-needed support to clubs, helping them to function better and achieve the club mission. They train club officers and provide other educational programs to help members improve their speaking and leadership skills. Districts also are responsible for building new clubs and attracting new members to existing clubs.

Q: Will the online system show the new dues amount?

A: Yes. Starting September 1, 2011, club officers will be able to add new members with October begin dates and pay renewals for the October through March period online with the correct dues amount.

Q: Where do we find updated new member applications?

A: Updated new member applications will be available for download from the Toastmasters International website by September 1, 2011.

Q: My club has not yet submitted applications for members who joined prior to October 1, 2011. What do we do to avoid paying the increased dues for retroactive payments?

A: Club officers can still submit new member applications with join dates prior to October 1, 2011. The new member fee and the dues will be at the previous rate. However, the renewal payment beginning October 1, 2011 will be at the new rate.

Q: If I use a previous version of an application, will it be accepted and processed?

A: Since we will have a new application online onSeptember 1 we ask that you use the new form. However, if you use a previous version of the application, we ask that you mark and submit the correct dues amount. If an application with the old dues amount is received, it will be processed, but the club will be billed the difference, which is payable within 30 days. Of course, for fastest service submit members online.

Q: My club forgot to submit a new member who joined prior to October 1. What do we do?

A: You can still add the member online or send in a membership application with a join date prior to October 1. The dues will be at the previous rate. The renewal payment for October - March will be at the new rate.

Q: My club paid dues for both the April 2011 and October 2011 periods in April. What do we do?

A: Your club will be billed for the additional amount due for the October 2011 period, i.e., $9 per person.

Q: What will the dues be for new clubs that charter by September 30, 2011?

A: Members of new clubs that charter by September 30 will pay six months dues in advance at the old rate of US $27. The subsequent pro-rate paid by those members will be at the new rate of $6 per month.

Q: Do we need to change our club bylaws? If so, how?

A: Article III of the Club Bylaws requires that clubs indicate the amount of dues and fees they collect from their members. Depending on how much your club currently charges members (international dues plus club dues), it may be necessary to change your club's bylaws. Please remember that a two-thirds favorable vote of the club's active membership is required to change club bylaws.

Any active club officer can make changes to their club's bylaws simply by logging in to www.toastmasters.org/login. Officers will log on with their personal user name and password.

· Once logged in, click on Members (top left of page)

· Click on the Club Central link (middle left of page)

· Select the applicable club name and number (center of page)

· Under Conduct Club Business, click on the option Change my club's bylaws

Or send an email to clubbylaws@toastmasters.org with the relevant information. Upon receipt, the information will be filed with your club's original documents.

Q: What about un-districted clubs?

A: In some parts of the world, clubs are not assigned to districts. Members of these clubs will pay US $54 per year, payable in increments of US $27 every six months. This is equivalent to US $4.50 per month.

Youth Leadership Program

MIM Toastmasters Club of Johor Bahru will be having our Youth Leadership Program on 10 - 12 December 2010.

The location will be at the Pandan City Training Centre (where we had our SpeechCraft Program) and on the last day, we will be having our graduation dinner ceremony at Grand Paragon Hotel.

The cost per youth (13 - 18 year old) is at RM250, which also includes the graduation dinner.

Parents, relatives and friends of participants who would like to join in the graduation dinner will have to pay RM60 per person for the international buffet.

Please register before 3rd December as places are limited to only 20 participants.

As reported at District Exco and Council meetings during the KL Semi-Annual Convention, the District will continue with the practice adopted for the first round of contests.

Please be reminded that Areas with 4 clubs or less, the first two winners from each club will proceed to compete in the Area Contest. Divisions with 4 Areas or less will send in the two top winners from each Area to compete in the Division contests.

Divisions with 5 Area or more will send only the top winner from each Area to compete in the Division Contests.

Please read and be very familiar with the Contest Rule Book and Speech Contest Manual to enable you to advise your Clubs. The Speech Contest Rulebook on the TI website has been updated with the correct eligibility requirements.

Whether you're opening a meeting on the job, giving a toast at a wedding, or participating in a competition, In business and in ordinary life, we are often required to engage in public speaking. Whether you're meeting on the job, giving a toast at a wedding or participating in a competition, you need to know a quality speech. While there are numerous resources to help you tackle the often frightening task of public speaking, what do you do when it comes to actually penning the words you must pronounce? Learn how to use humor, anecdotes, quotations, and rhetorical devices to make your speech captivating.

Open with a Joke or an Anecdote You can grab your audience's attention by opening your speech with some humor or an interesting story. Which is more appropriate will depends upon your audience. In a solemn setting, you will of course want to avoid levity, or, if your comic delivery is not renowned, you may also want to rely on an attention-grabbing story instead.

Whether you choose a joke or an anecdote, it must tie in to the main purpose of your speech. If you can't find a moment of levity in a real life situation or recall an appropriate story on your own, you can turn to various books that offer such ideas. If you do choose to employ humor, be certain to avoid offending your audience. Always choose a joke that is appropriate for your audience, and be aware that jokes can occasionally fall flat. While successful jokes may earn you more accolades than anecdotes, often an anecdote is the safer course.

Using Quotations "Though old the thought and oft expressed," wrote James Russell Lowell, "'tis his at last who says it best." And if someone can say it better than you, why not borrow his or her words?" Ambrose Bierce cynically defined quoting as "the act of repeating erroneously the words of another." But you can attempt to avoid misquotation by accessing a reference guide. While numerous internet websites offer access to a variety of quotations, you can best find a quote that is appropriate for your subject matter.

Remember: always give credit where credit is due. You can introduce your quotations with phrases like "As ___ said," or "In the words of ___." Never allow the audience to assume your borrowed words belong to you.

Employing Rhetorical Devices The speech, like the poem or the short story, is an art form of its own. As such, it requires the use of special techniques known as rhetorical devices. Rhetorical devices, which often employ repetition, lend a cadence to your words, so that the listener is more likely to stay in tune and remember your message.

Put Your Tools to Work Jokes, anecdotes, quotations, and rhetorical devices are essential tools for writing a great speech. But these tools are not enough by themselves. They are the implements that will inspire listeners to grasp your meaning, but you must first have a message to grasp. As Dr. Ralph Smedley has written, "Merely to make a speech is not enough. The speech must mean something, lead to something. . . Every speech should be directed to the accomplishment of some definite purpose." You know your purpose: simply employ these tools to communicate it to your audience.

Dear Toastmaster,

1. Full Convention Package Fee capped at RM420/-

The Convention Organizing Committee subscribes fully and wholly to our dear DG’s recent request to cap the full Convention Package Fee at RM420/-. Our DG is mindful that this first Convention of the re-formed District 51 should be participated by as many TMs as possible from all the Peninsula states.

Therefore, those of you who have paid 450/- will be entitled to a refund. Our Finance Director, DTM Meyyappa, will make the arrangements for you.

2. Full Convention Package Registration ceases on 27 October

In order to comply with the Hotel’s requirements, and as well to facilitate the Organizing Committee’s preparations, registration for the full Convention Package will cease at midnight on Wednesday, 27^th October. All intended participations thereafter may only be via the purchase of Individual Event or Sub Package Tickets.

3. Sale of certain Event Tickets cease on 27 October

Kindly note that the sale of A2 tickets (Welcome Night on Friday), B5 and B6 tickets (Gala Night and Hall of Fame on Saturday) will also cease on Wednesday, 27^th October.

4. Transfers of Full Convention Packages permitted till 31 October

The Committee will entertain transfers of Full Convention Packages (for the unexpired events) right up to the final event on the final day, i.e. 31^st October.

5. Setting up of a Convention Package Transfers Bureau

Although the responsibility to find a replacement-delegate is on the ticket-holder, we are willing to help find a replacement, but purely as a service, and not as a guarantee.

Greetings form the 18th Semi Annual Convention desk!

I am back with more updates for you! I am sure most of you are awaiting to know especially the theme for our Welcome Night! I assure you that this is going to be really fun and get ready to let your hair down.

Thank you very much to those who have reverted to us on their meal preference i.e. Vegetarian, you have made our organizing job easier. To those of you who have not reverted to us, we welcome you to do so by this week as we really want you to have the best experience in this coming 18th Semi Annual Convention.

We will be going on air too! Yes, this Friday, 22nd October 2010! Why You Should Care About The Distinguished Club Program

The DCP improves club meetings and boosts enthusiasm

If you've been a member for more than a few months, chances are you've heard of the Distinguished Club Program, or DCP. You may also know that each year, clubs that perform well in the DCP are recognized for their efforts and can proudly display a Distinguished, Select Distinguished or President's Distinguished ribbon on their club banner. But what's in it for you, the individual member?

Here's why focusing on your club's performance in the DCP should matter to every Toastmasters member.

The DCP promotes club quality. A club that performs well in the DCP provides a higher-quality club experience for all of its members. Each aspect of the DCP, from membership to education awards to club officer training, is designed to enhance and reinforce the supportive atmosphere for each member, every time the club meets.

The DCP ensures productive meetings. Focusing on the educational goals of the DCP will keep members moving through the education program. When people earn communication and leadership awards, they gain much more than just a certificate or points toward the DCP; they gain the satisfaction and confidence that comes from completing a goal. They also provide an inspirational example for other club members, who can see the transformation that has occurred as a direct result of Toastmasters training. Other aspects of the DCP help keep meetings productive, too. Keeping club membership at or above 20, for example, will fill club meeting roles and maintain the energy level needed for a successful meeting.

The DCP provides structure and guidance. Clubs that perform well in the DCP always know who should be doing what and when they should be doing it. The club officer training requirements of the DCP, for example, help ensure that club business is conducted fairly, efficiently and in accordance with Toastmasters policy. Similarly, the educational goals of the DCP provide direction and incentive for all members to achieve individually as well as collectively.

The DCP increases the enthusiam of the club. The goal is not for clubs to compete against one another; its for all clubs to strive to achieve the same standards of excellence. Nonetheless, striving for achievement in the DCP program is a way to engage the spirit of friendly competition that can help motivate club members to perform their duties with gusto.

So remember: When you work hard to help your club achieve in the DCP, you're not only helping your club - you're helping yourself as well.

Hello... how are you doing?

WOW! Time flies and we have finished a quarter of the term!

Month of September should have been a rather busy month with us visiting Area and Division Contests. I could still remember the days I was keen to participate in contests...truly a thrilling feeling. Its not about winning that matters BUT its about participating wholeheartedly and sharing valuable messages to a much focussed crowd. As the contests are almost over, its about time for you to consider signing up for the KL Semi Annual Convention if you have not done so. It will certainly be exciting to see 10 finalists on stage at the same time competing to be the District Champion!! Hurry!!!! Sign up before the price skyrockets up.

Semi-Annual Dues had been another area of focus as we need to ensure every member renews their dues. It is our ultimate responsibility to share the benefits, inspire the members while allaying any adverse concerns, if there are, in getting 100% renewals done on time. This is the responsibility of everyone from the member right up to the DG. Practice the humbleness in simplicity to reach out to the members! The deadline may have passed, but you can still renew your dues to continue enjoying the benefits of Toastmasters. Do so now and if you need assistance, pls contact the Area Governors, Division GOvernors or Senior D51 Officers.

I am sure many of you would have witness the GREAT District Directory 2010/11 that had been compiled and coordinated under the leadership of our District Secretary, Parames. The Secretariat Team certainly deserves a great applaud from all of us for coining together the pieces of data and additional info, which now becomes very handy to us. As we always say, ggod things come in limited quantities, we are only able to supply 3 copis to each Club which we expect to be shared among the Excos / Members strictly for Toastmasters purposes only. Please respect and observe the data in strictest confidentiality.

The Amazing Benefits of Toastmasters had since made entry into some new organisations where we will soon be witnessing the birth of a few new Clubs in October - namely Taylor's University TMC (Div B), Monash Universtiy TMC (Div G), USM Students TMC (Div N) and Gold Coin Larkin TMC (Div A). Join me in welcoming them onboard our family while we continue to strive to expand the network of clubs by seizing every opportunity/lead available. Tap on the support of LGM and the district team to provide instant information to the interested parties leading to a demo meeting. This would be the least we could do in bringing the magical transformation to other's lives. Alternatively, you can provide us the leads for follow-up while we shall reciprocate your efforts by getting you involved in the whole process of chartering and subsequent recognition. District Governor's September Message

Dear Toastmasters in Peninsula Malaysia

HAPPY MALAYSIA DAY!

September is indeed a crucial month as we need to ensure our semi-annual dues are remitted to TI by 1st Oct 2010. Whilst the collection may be in progress, as club officers, kindly walk the extra mile in ensuring every member renews their subscription for the next 6 months. The continuity of the club and injection of variety into the meetings very much depend on the retention cum recruitment of members. As a motivational factor, the district is pleased to launch a campaign to recognise CLUBs that successfully renews 90% of their membership base by 01Oct10. Ie. If your club base on 01Jul10 was 20, the club need to renew for at least 18 existing members to be eligible for this recognition. The objective of this campaign is to reward CLUBs which successfully retain 90% of their members. Club Officers, please strategise and drive this message across to your club members!

The district is pleased by the progress made in chartering new clubs. This being the ianugural year for Peninsula Malaysia to proudly inherit the identity of District 51, we should all feel honoured in sensing and seizing opportunities to charter even more clubs - thus expanding the network of clubs in District 51. Whilst, we had KMPP chartered early this month, we are pleased to announce a few more clubs i.e. Monash University, USM Students and Taylors' College had embarked on the journey of being born as a Toastmasters Club. I am very thankful to those who had played a role in making the chartering of those clubs possible. This should be embraced in us to actively source for new leads, progressed through the chartering steps with the hope of a new club being chartered. Its never an easy process and takes a lot of time, patience, coordination and execution - which we certainly recognise and are thankful for. Keep the momentum going and we look forward for many more clubs being chartered in the coming months.

While we go on chartering new clubs, please be mindful to be of help to those clubs below the charter strength (below 20) in particular those in the "ICU" category (below 12). We need to help these clubs sail through their hard times by motivating and re-presenting the benefits of Toastmasters. At the same time, the details of such clubs (below 12) should be channelled to our Club Coach Chair, Sue Ding for the necessary club coach appointments to be initiated. It takes a lot of effort and time to charter a new club, thus we should even be working harder in securing the survival of these clubs. Please discuss with me should there be any chronic challenges in respect of any clubs. I am willing to get myself to the root of the problems in ensuring every clubs in D51 survives!

While we hope every club officer understands their roles by now, in contributing effectively towards productive Toastmasters meetings. The district directories will be out later this month while the website is also updated regularly - please surf and make yourself informed on the new developments all the time. As you may know, the KL Convention 2010 is just around the corner and am personally looking forward in greeting all of you in person for the very membership in District 51. Preaching the principle of the higher we go, the more humble we must be - I am eagerly looking forward to touch base and serve you in person. Attending a Convention is certainly wonderful for the power-packed 3 days and missing it would be a great loss especially when its held in our homeland - WE wouldn't get a better opportunity to rise and celebrate for the nation as a District if not at the Semi Annual Convention in KL. Don't miss the Convention - further details can be obtained from the District website.

In conclusion, I appeal for your extra attention in ensuring the membership dues are renewed on time while always keeping an eye for opportunities to recruit members and/or charter new clubs.

Smedley Award

Program Dates: August 1 - September 30

Can you add five new, dual, or reinstated members between August 1 and September 30? By doing so you'll qualify to receive a "Smedley Award" ribbon to display on your club's banner. Membership applications and payment for members who join between August 1 and September 30. Each member's join date as listed on the application must be no later than September. Transfer and charter members do not count for credit. In addition to the ribbon, qualifying clubs will also earn a special discount code for 10% off the next club order (discount code expires six months from date of issue).

Talk Up Toastmasters!

Program Dates: February 1 - March 31

Toastmasters love to talk! So take advantage of it. During the "Talk Up Toastmasters!" membership contest, you can encourage your members to invite guests to a special meeting where regular procedures are augmented by a discussion of Toastmasters' many benefits. Add five new, dual or reinstated members to your roster between February1 and March 31 to receive a special "Talk up Toastmasters!" ribbon to display on your club's banner. Membership applications and payment for members who join between February 1 and March 31 must be received at World Headquarters or online no later than March 31. Each member's join date as listed on the application must be no later than March. Transfer and charter members do not count for credit. In addition to the ribbon, qualifying clubs will also earn a special discount code for 10% off their next club order (discount code expires six months from date issue).

Beat the Clock

Program Dates: May 1 - June 30

Toastmasters are taught to run meetings on time, finish speeches on time and make membership goals on time. "Beat the Clock" is about finishing the year on schedule - with a bang! Here's a wonderful new club goal: Earn the "Beat the Clock" award! Plan a contest in your club to motivate every member to get involved. Clubs adding five new, dual or reinstated members during these two months receive a "Beat the Clock" ribbon to display on the club's banner. Membership applications and payment for members who join between May 1 and June 30. Each members join date as listed on the application must be no later than June. Transfer and charter members do not count for credit. In addition to the ribbon, qualifying clubs will also earn a special discount code for 10% off their next club order (discount code expires six months from date of issue).

Program Dates: July 1 - June 30, of the following year

Membership growth is important to ensure club success. As a sponsor of five new members, you will qualify to receive a unique sponsor's pin. As an outstanding sponsor of 10 new members, you will qualify to receive a special star pin. Effective July 1, 2009, as a sponsor of 15 new members, you will qualify to receive a special discount for 25% off your new product purchase from Toastmasters International World Headquarters. You've also made a significant contribution to your club's long-term success. To receive credit as a sponsor, your name must appear on the application for Toastmasters club membership along with your home club number. Please print or type information legibly. No changes can be made to the applications once they are received by World Headquarters. New, dual and reinstated members count for credit, transfer and charter members do not. Dear District 51 Officers and Members

Humble greetings from the DG's desk.

It is indeed my honour to wish each and every Malaysian "Happy Merdeka" as we step-in to celebrate our 53rd Independance Day on the 31st Aug 2010. We have come a long way to have a district for ourselves - District 51 that comprise of Peninsula Malaysia alone, though we will be missing our brothers and sisters in Sabah & Sarawak who are now part of District 87.

This would therefore make this year's MERDEKA CELEBRATION indeed a meaningful one with the whole district rising up towards saluting the nation's independence. WOW! What an amazing and prosperous growth the Toastmasters Organisation had been in Malaysia. Admirably, we have grown leaps and bounds with great potential to continue expanding and touching the hearts of many men and women out there.

In light of this much glorious celebration, I wish to proudly announce the birth of the 1st baby (club) KMPP TOASTMASTERS CLUB, purely on the current district team's efforts in District 51 for term 2010/11. It comes yet from another new born division - Division K currently spearheaded by DvG Sabrina Abdul Rahim. The district congratulates the Division K Governor, team members, Fauziah as well as the supportive Pengarah of Kolej Matrikulasi Pulau Pinang ( KMPP ), Tuan Haji Khairi Jalun for the enormous willingness on chartering the club. This club will be joining the big family of District 51 on the 1st September 2010. Please join-me in WELCOMING THEM ABOARD AND EXTENDING THEM OUR HEARTIEST CONGRATULATIONS!

As we progress in the journey of Toastmasters, we should always treasure the valuable moments, discard the negative ones while being thirsty for new learning opportunities. This would help us focus better towards ACHIEVING GREATNESS TOGETHER! Helping one another grow and shine, offers great self-satisfaction that enriches our life. Rules of representatives to the Area Level

I forward you the notice from District 51 LGET, Sue Chan pertaining to the number of representatives that each club is eligible to send to the Area Level. In an Area where there are more than 4 clubs, each club is allowed to send 1 representative per contest to the Area Level. This is accordance with the rules set by TI.

Following is an extract from the Contest Rulebook (2b) :

"Eight weeks prior to the area contest, if an area has four assigned clubs or fewer, districts have the option to allow the two highest placed available contestants from each club to compete in the area contest. Should additional clubs charter prior to the area contest, the two highest placed available contests from each club are permitted to compete. In those divisions with four assigned areas or less, districts have the option to allow the two highest placed available contestants from each area to compete. In districts with four assigned divisions or less, districts have hte option to allow the two highest placed available contestants from each division to participate in the district contest."

How are things with everyone so far? It was great to have met some of you at the recent TLI sessions. I hope by now you have charted your course for the success of your Club, Area and Division. Let us all begin with the end in mind - to be President's Distinguished.

We are now in the midst of TLI training sessions. We started with Division C on 3rd July and will end with Division W on 7th August.

Whilst getting involved with the TLI training for club officers, please also bear in mind that the Humorous Speech and Evaluation Contests are the upcoming events to be marked on your calendars. Please get your Organising Chairs and teams ready.

District 51 has confirmed that the contests would be conducted with participation as follows:

Areas with 4 clubs or less - 2 contestants from each Club

Divisions with 4 Areas or less - 2 contestants from each Area

District 51 contest - 1 contestant from each Division (10 Divisions)

District 51 contests would be held on 31st October 2010 (Sunday). The District 51 Semi-Annual Convention is 29th-31st October in KL.

If you still have not registered for KL Convention, please do it now. The Convention Chair is our Div.G Governor, NJ Singam. Get in touch with him.

All Divisions are advised to hold their Division Contests latest by 10th October. This is to facilitate the Division Champions to have at least 3 weeks to get ready for the District contest on 31st October 2010.

Division A Governor's eulogy for the late DTM E.T. Lee

It was only on 07 July 2010 that I sat beside him at the JB City & CIMA Toastmasters Club Installation Dinner. He spoke about chartering a new Toastmasters Club and that we were going to keep in touch. I guess that was not meant to be.

In the 3 years that I have known him as a Toastmaster, I find him to be supportive not only in my leadership role but also to others who needed his personal guidance. He had always been vocal & had no qualms in saying what was on his mind even if it made him unpopular. I recall how he kept reminding us of the Toastmasters 4 core values. His services & contributions, especially, to Division A, are unrivalled & will be remembered. He will be dearly missed.

E T was indeed a passionate Toastmaster, a real friend & a loving family man. He always spoke affectionately about his daughters. His sudden departure came as a shock and now I have to say, “Goodbye my friend. Rest in peace”.

A Solemn Announcement

The wake is at JB Tionghua Centre (opposite Danga City Mall) Parlour No.8.

Funeral on Tuesday, 17 August 2010 at 1030am. Toastmasters will gather at 10am for eulogy and to pay our final respects.

Dear Division Governors, Area Governors, and Club Presidents,

As we approach the end of the first month in this new term, it is with a deep sense of appreciation and gratitude that I acknowledge your collective support and response to the call to ACHIEVE GREATNESS TOGETHER.

It has been a great three weeks in terms of activities -- starting with the TLI Team outdoing itself with each TLI session, the initial TTT session, and the gloriously successful DOT session.The feedback from everywhere is a genuine feel-good feeling.

The World Cup too, helped to raise the adrenalin level all round... even among the non football enthusiasts!

And in that same tempo, many clubs have now launched into the Contest sprint -- the pitting of champions against champions in true Toastmasters spirit.

And, all of these will culminate in October... when the creme de la creme among us will stand strong and tall... in their sterling performances at the Legend Hotel in Kuala Lumpur.

Yes, I am referring to our forthcoming 18th Semi Annual Convention -- on the 29th, 30th, and 31st of October.

As I have gathered, the Organizing Committee is going the extra extra mile to make it a superlative event -- in terms of value for your money, value for your time, and value for your effort in attending and participating.

Please refer to the attached flyer for the highlights of this great event... and visit their blogspot --tm51connects.blogspot.com -- to get more and better information, including the Registration and Accommodation Forms.

But please do it quickly... because their Early Bird Offer at RM 390/- for the Convention Package ends on 15th August 2010. 10 ways to help your club succeed.

Several years ago, a long-time friend sent me an e-mail titled “The Team Commandments.” To my surprise, it was a refreshing look at team construction and outlook. Since early 2001, I have had these 10 items in the forefront of my mind, whether building teams at work or in Toastmasters.

For the purpose of this article, I’d like to share my interpretation of the Team Commandments as it relates to Toastmasters:

1. Help each other to be right, not wrong. How often have you seen a new member make a mistake during a meeting, followed by someone immediately saying “point of order” and correcting the person on the spot? This is an obviously embarrassing situation, especially for a first-time Toastmaster of the Day. Instead we need to take new Toastmasters aside after a meeting and give them the boost they need to keep growing.

I normally pull new members aside and say, “I realize you got off track a little and Toastmaster Jones corrected you, but here is how you can try it next time.” Education and motivation will not only help build the next generation of advanced Toastmasters, it will help them be ‘right’ in future situations.

2. Look for ways to make new ideas work, not for reasons they won’t. New members bring fresh new ideas that merit consideration. Too often we dismiss ideas and say, “We have been doing it this way for years and it has always carved us Distinguished Club status.” But wait a second; you just told this new member that his input does not count. It is unlikely this member will suggest another idea for club betterment. Obviously, not every idea is the nugget of gold you are looking for. But you can give it a try and if it doesn’t pan out, at least you showed that everyone’s voice is important and heard.

3. Speak positively about each other and about your organization at every opportunity. I love to brag about my home club and its members. After each meeting we send out a positive meeting recap and a preview of our next meeting. We take opportunities during the meeting to praise accomplishments and continue to stress where we are on our road toward Distinguished Club status. Some may see this as crazy, but it is far from that...it is contagious. If your members see the leaders of the club bragging and talking up individual and team accomplishments, it is human nature to join in. Make each goal toward DCP a celebration; make each advancement a reason to brag on the individual. Sooner, not later, you will have created a culture of Toastmasters recruiters who truly want to share the excitement with others.

4. Help each other win, and take pride in each others’ victories. Everyone in the club needs to help each other excel. Everyone has joined for personal growth, so be proud of each others’ successes. Remember, if you have already achieved you personal goal for the year, maybe you need to take a step back and help some of the other members to move forward toward their goals. In the end, no one wins, unless everyone wins.

5. Compliment often. Praise goes an incredibly long way toward building confidence in communication and leadership. From my early days in Toastmasters I learned that every compliment contributes to a more cohesive and confident team. When I have the honor of serving as Toastmaster of the Day, I try to compliment every single person who comes to the lectern through a positive and motivational introduction.

6. Recognize that the customer is not an interruption to your work, but reason for it. For the purpose of this discussion I consider the customer to be every guest who walks into a club meeting and every new member in need of a mentor. Don’t look at these new members as an interruption; look at them as your reason for being in Toastmasters – to help people grow. Find ways to bring the new members both into the club and into the speaking schedule so they can immediately start realizing the benefits.

When I serve as a mentor, I try to sit down and plan out the new member’s entire list of manual assignments during our first discussion. We merely review each project and jot down ideas that come to mind for each speech. Believe it or not, this builds the member’s confidence in his or her ability to complete all the speeches.

7. Realize that “being right” is irrelevant to good service; the customer’s perception is what counts. How do you welcome new members and guests? Guests are golden and should be treated as such. Make every meeting a sales pitch and full of excitement. If your meetings are boring, why would a guest want to return? The guest must leave with a perception that Toastmasters is the place he/she needs to be and realize there is a substantial benefit to joining the club.

8. Maintain a positive mental outlook. Do everything with enthusiasm and good humor; your attitude is contagious. I look at a Toastmasters meeting as a chance to celebrate the joys of improving my communication and leadership ability. Every chance I get to speak, no matter what the role, I am enthusiastic. Even when I serve as the timer, I introduce the position with zeal and explain the duties with a bit of humor. Keep your attitude positive and watch you membership grow.

9. Sacrifice for the good of the team. Sometimes you need to slow down your pace toward a goal so another member can succeed and move on. Give as many speeches as you can, but always put others to the forefront.

Additionally, make sure everyone in your club knows what the goals are for Distinguished Club status. Come up with plans for reaching your goals and publicize them. Let your members know that you may need to schedule others to speak more often for a short period of time to meet goals, but you will get everyone back in the fold quickly. Bottom line: build a culture where everyone accepts the team’s goals and are willing to play their part to make them a reality.

10. Have fun. One of my club members was gone on a two-week vacation. Upon returning he said, “I missed these meetings and I’m happy to finally be back.” Toastmasters is a springboard to better communication and leadership, but it must be built on a foundation of fun. Too many people are afraid of public speaking, but if they perceive it as fun and non-threatening, they are more likely to jump right in and get involved. Also, if the atmosphere is fun and members can joke back and forth, those public speaking errors will give members a chance to laugh with, not at the other members.

These 10 items have served me well for many years, both at work and in my local clubs. I hope you can use some of the ideas in your club. Maybe by simply looking at things a little differently, you can draw in new members or retain some that are on the fence of staying or going. Remember, everyone joined the club to become better speakers and leaders. It is your job as the leader of the club to help them realize this goal, so make it positive experience for the individual and the team.

Due certain unforeseen circumstances the joint TLI for Division P&G has made moved from 17 Jul 2010 to 31 Jul 2010. Please take note.

TLI Officers would like to emphasize their aim is to have 90% club officers trained and to give the Club Officers a great learning experience! The better the clubs officers are trained, the better results you will get. The purpose of TLI is to motivate your club officers and to equip them with the right skills/tools to begin the term. So encourage as many of them to attend.

Please register with the Asst Div A Gov Edu & Training Tan Eng Suan (aka OC for Division A TLI) in advance if you are interested to attend any of the listed sessions.

Division A TLI 1 was successfully conducted on 4 July 2010. TLI Chair, Dennis Wee encourages all Club Officers to attend TLI of other Divisions throughout District 51 to maximise the learning experience, in particular Officers from Clubs that missed Division A TLI or Clubs that did not meet a minimum of 4 Officers' attendance to qualify for DCP points.
